3 Tips to Ensure Your Team is Prepared for Productivity
For the past several weeks, I’ve been sharing ways to streamline your business. There is one area of business that often gets overlooked, however – equipping your team for productivity.
If you think about it, your team is likely your largest investment, both in payroll and in time spent developing them. With the right resources and systems in place, this same team can also provide your highest ROI.
Putting these in place can be challenging (and costly) to do if you try to do it all on your own – but with the right framework and feedback, the process becomes much easier!
Over the years, I’ve learned a lot about how to effectively streamline my systems and equip my team for productivity, and I’d love to share some of my top strategies with you!
#1: Build Your Systems!
This is something that every successful business owner learns at one point or another. Many of us learn this lesson once we’re too busy to ignore it, but we learn it!
The key to getting the right systems built and implemented at the right time is to not try to do it all yourself. Instead, use a proven framework and adjust it to your company. This will save you countless hours and thousands of dollars – and a lot of trial and error!
When I started out as a business owner, I didn’t understand the power of systems. To be honest, I wasted so much time – dozens of hours each week – trying to keep up with everything. I did my best to make sure that my team worked a normal amount of hours, and I made up the difference.
I was exhausted, burned out, and ready to drop…and my team didn’t have what they needed to be profitable. Something had to change.
That something was systems. Once I learned how to build them, I was able to reclaim my time, my team was productive, and my business started turning a strong profit. In less than a year I doubled my revenues – and then I doubled them again.

#2: Get Your Team on Board
Something that I have learned is that building systems on your own (and then expecting your team to automatically get on board) doesn’t result in a productive team.
Building them on your own might seem more efficient, but it rarely works. Not only will your team be less likely to implement changes they don’t understand, but if they’re not involved in planning the new systems, those systems could be missing key components.
Instead, involve your team in the process. It will often take longer than if you just sat down and wrote them yourself, but your team members are far more likely to implement what they have a part in building. A quicker implementation means better productivity!
By getting your team members involved in writing your systems, you also solve other issues.
- You won’t have to take time away from running your business to draft the systems yourself.
- The people who will be using the systems daily are more likely to catch details you might miss.
- When your employees are given the ability to innovate and take ownership of their roles, they’re more likely to get on board with helping you grow in other ways!
#3: Communicate Clear Expectations
When you take the time to develop and mentor a strong team – and when you implement the systems that are right for your business – your team will be equipped to do their job productively. There may still be something missing, though: do your team members understand what your goals are and how they can help you crush them?
As business owners, we tend to take on not only the planning, which we should. However, a lot of the time, we also tend to expect our team to just know what we want. All too often, they don’t – and that can seriously affect their productivity.
This communication should start during the onboarding process and should continue through quarterly reviews. In addition, you’ll want to have consistent lines of communication set up with your department supervisors so they’re equipped to communicate clearly with the rest of your team.
With clear, consistent communication of expectations in place, your team will be prepared to use the resources and systems you’ve given them to help you grow a productive, profitable business that allows you (and them) to thrive!
