Supporting Small Businesses
Small businesses are everywhere. Literally! In fact, current statistics indicate that approximately 99% of all businesses in America fall into the small business category. These companies add so much to our society, and the owners need our support.
As you may know, I am a huge fan of small businesses – so much so that I have built my own business around the idea of helping small business owners grow and thrive!
You don’t have to go that far to support these incredible entrepreneurs, though – you can show them your support in little ways every day!
The Power of a Purchase
One of the best ways to support a small business is by purchasing from them.
Think about the shops that you love to wander around, whether you are on vacation or just enjoying an afternoon off. How often do you find a little treasure that catches your eye?
How often do you decide that you don’t really “need” it and put it back?
When I was growing up, my mom owned a winery in southern Oregon. I learned at an early age just how much effort, dedication, and passion goes into a small business – as well as what it takes to keep things running.
I developed a love for wine, and I really enjoy finding new wine shops. When I visit, I am always intentional to purchase something. This isn’t because I need another bottle of wine, but because I know how much my show of support will mean to the owner.
Put yourself in the shop owner’s shoes: is there anything more demoralizing than watching people come in, hearing them comment about the selection you put so much effort into curating and the shop you have dedicated countless hours to, and watching them walk out the door without making a purchase?
Of course, it happens, but it’s never a fun thing. As business owners, we have all been there. However, I want to be the one to lighten someone’s day – to show my support and appreciation!
I want to encourage you to do the same. Next time you are out shopping – whether it is for wine, books, clothes, or interesting little gifts – find the treasure that catches your eye. Instead of putting it back on the shelf, splurge a bit and bring home a new favorite. And when you do, let the person behind the counter know how much you appreciate all they do!
Promoting Your Favorite Businesses!
Purchasing isn’t the only way to show support for a small business, though. It is always appreciated, but it isn’t always feasible!
Another way to show support is to actively promote them. You can do on social media and by word of mouth recommendations.
On social media, take a moment to “like” their business page – and when their posts show up in your feed, comment or share them! This does wonders for their reach and engagement, and it goes a long way toward helping your friends find them. It doesn’t cost you a thing, but it makes a world of difference!
If your favorite businesses offer a Facebook group, feel free to join! You will find a community of other people with similar interests and stay up to date on the newest happenings!
When the businesses you follow have a promotion or launch a new product or service, feel free to share it with your friends and followers. Even if it isn’t exactly what you need at the time, it might be the perfect fit for someone you know!
Another way you can promote a small business is through word of mouth.
Did your mechanic do an amazing job resolving your car troubles – and save you money off the original quote? Did your attorney come through for you in a challenging situation? Did a restaurant surpass your expectations and serve you an incredible meal?
Tell someone! Seriously – word of mouth is one of the most effective marketing tools out there, and it doesn’t cost you (as a customer) anything. When your friends and family hear that a business has come through for you, they will be more likely to try it out for themselves!
